… well in my reading habits anyway!
It was my birthday this week – yes, I had cake and alcohol; no, I didn’t get massively drunk – and one of my presents was something I have been yearning for… a Kindle.
It wasn’t one of the all singing all dancing ones (we can’t afford those ones as we are starving artists) but it was a wi-fi connected one. And I love it!
I’ve got an archive of over 100 books stored up to read and now I can.
The one I started with was “Sculpting David” by Nya Rawlyns.
David Michaels, heir to an artistic legacy–his parents, Adrian Michaels, premier sculptor, and Elena Stefanova, patrician Russian impressionist–breaks away to start a Gallery in the shark infested waters of NYC’s art world. David and his General Manager/mistress, Janet, approach Jacqueline Maurer, the talented daughter of Adrian’s archrival, to showcase the Gallery’s opening salvo. Jackie will not disrespect her Papa, the redoubtable Jacques Maurer, and declines.
David pursues Jacqueline using a fake identity and masquerading as a fellow student. Intent on pressing his case, he loses himself in his art and the incomparable talent of his prey. David volunteers to model in her oils class, leaving nothing to chance and nothing to the imagination.Jacqueline has complications of her own–a relationship with her swimming coach–and a plea from Jacques to come home to Paris to work in his studio. Torn between opposing factions and unsure of her heart, Jacgueline embraces her dark yearnings to produce the image that will ultimately captivate David.Elena Stefanova must enter stage left to manipulate the warring muses, star crossed lovers and irascible enemies. Romance smiles wisely as David’s creation, The Raging Bull, pulls free of its confines.
I don’t normally read Romance novels, but the blurb drew me in and once I started reading, the beautifully realised characters and emotionally charged scenarios held me hostage and I lost all sense of being a reader. I was instead a fly on the wall in the story.
Nya Rawlyns paints with words, every one perfectly placed and shaded with emotion. David comes across as a sexually charged, tortured artistic genius. He’s every art student’s dream of a life model, beautifully proportioned and intriguingly muscled. You find yourself lusting after him in the same way as Jackie, his counterpart in this story. The sex scenes are realistic and massively erotic and I can honestly see this as a movie or tv series.
I have never been able to lose myself in romance or erotica and I am always sceptical of the claims of publishers when it comes to their marketing of this genre. I am too much of a writer to ignore spelling, grammar and formatting mistakes in genres that I don’t read a lot of and find that those kind of problems drag me away from the storyline.
In the case of “Sculpting David” , I did lose myself and that it happened is purely due to the genius of the author. I can fully recommend it!

As I make my way through my kindle collection, I am going to post reviews of all the books I have on it… there are some authors that I have reviewed before, some that I haven’t and I hope that you’ll stay with me for the trip!
