Yes I know I haven’t done anything of what I had promised to do during my birthday – well apart from discount the books… I didn’t get much choice – there’s been something wrong with our phoneline and I couldn’t get on the net. Also I’ve been feeling very tired and run down this month – turns out that I’m anaemic.
I’m sorry.
This is one of the drawbacks of being an Indie Author – you have to do all your own marketing and I’m a reluctant Marketer at the best of times.
I know how to do it. It was a part of the business courses I took at University and I spent a while working in a Call Centre not long after I graduated, so I’ve done cold calling and the whole “While I’ve got you on the line…” spiel as well. I wasn’t very good at it then, and I’m still not very good at it now.
Why?
Well yes, I’m confident that my work is worth reading – I’ve had enough people say so after they’ve read it – and while maybe my execution of the MS’s could be improved, that’s something that should get better with time and the application of an Editor or two.
So why am I bad at selling my own work?
Two reasons.
1) I was brought up to be modest about my own accomplishments. In Britain, we are taught not to boast or rub people’s noses in the fact that we’ve done something.
2) I don’t like Spam. I’m not keen on advertising and knowing how the PR companies play on the Human Heart / Psyche makes it worse, not better. I don’t want to do it – I feel ucky (PT’s word) when I eventually try to push my own work.
Anyway. I just wanted to explain why I hadn’t run the competitions I had promised to do…
Yup – this whole post is one long homework excuse… but at least I’m being honest and haven’t made up a wild excuse – “Sorry, Miss. The Dog ate my computer.”
